That Time I Co-Created a Book with Two Teachers and 19 Kids

When my daughter’s PK3 class started their end-of-year project, I never imagined it would lead to such a fun collaboration. The project theme was books, and since I was in the process of starting Crazy Little Books, the teachers and I got to talking. This conversation quickly turned into an exciting project that resulted in a wonderful book called "Dinosaurs Have Friends."

With the eager participation of 19 imaginative children, we decided to create a book together.

The creation of "Dinosaurs Have Friends" started unexpectedly. One day, during playground time, the children were playing with a ball, and it got stuck in a tree. Despite their best efforts, the teachers and children couldn’t retrieve the ball, leaving everyone a bit disappointed. But this incident sparked a wave of imaginative problem-solving among the children.

The next day, during the morning meeting, the ball was still stuck in the tree, and the children began discussing ways to get it down. This collective brainstorming session, combined with the imaginations of 19 children and two creative teachers, laid the groundwork for the story. The teachers guided the children through the process of developing the plot, making sure every child contributed an idea or a piece of dialogue.

Illustrating the book was a truly collaborative effort. The children used different art techniques to bring the story to life, from finger painting and collage to crayon sketches and watercolor splashes. Each page of the book showcases their creativity, with vibrant, joyful illustrations that perfectly match the fun narrative.

The Magic of "Dinosaurs Have Friends"

Creating "Dinosaurs Have Friends" was more than just a fun project; it was a lesson in collaboration, creativity, and the power of imagination. The children learned to work together, share ideas, and see a project through from start to finish. For me, it was a heartwarming experience to witness their boundless enthusiasm and to contribute to a project that embodies the spirit of Crazy Little Books: "Imagination Brought to Life."

This book is a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved when we nurture creativity and encourage children to explore their imaginations. "Dinosaurs Have Friends" is not just a story about dinosaurs; it's a celebration of friendship, teamwork, and the incredible potential within each child. I loved every moment of this project and am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such a fantastic group of teachers and kids.
